As a member of the Mount McKinley class of warships, the
Panamint was fitted as a general communications vessel. It
served as a flagship for, among others, Vice Admiral Jack
Fletcher, and could also accomodate Marine or Army units.
The communications equipment aboard the Panamint, specifically
the radio and radar equipment, was particularly elaborate.
